On Thursday, the Saeima transferred law amendments to the Legal Affairs Committee, which provide for the creation of a new position of the Minister for Energy and Climate, and to implement the intention of the new coalition to introduce the positions of deputy ministers.

The transfer of the draft amendments to the committee was supported by 62 members, while 35 were against.

The amendments create a new position as Minister for Climate and Energy in the Cabinet. These amendments were tabled by members of the new coalition, the New Unit”, the United List, and the National Alliance.

The new ministry aims to bring together existing departments from the Ministries for Economics and Environmental Protection and Regional Development. Informally, Raimonds Čudars (New Unity) could take the helm of the new ministry.

At the same time, amendments to the State Administration Structure Law have been submitted to the Legal Affairs committee, which, according to the intention of the new coalition, intends to introduce deputy ministers. The transfer of amendments to the committee was supported by 54 members, while 43 were against.

The law stipulates that the deputy minister is familiar with certain sectors and policies and will have the right of adviser at government meetings. Deputy ministers will be appointed by the Prime Minister and will be able to do so on the proposal of the Minister for the relevant field.
