Saeima rejects proposal to show calorie content on alcohol

On May 27 the Saeima rejected the proposed amendments to the Law on the Circulation of Alcoholic Drinks, which would include the amount of calories on the packaging of these drinks.

The aim of the changes was to ensure that the labelling of bottles of alcoholic beverages contains information on the nutritional value of alcoholic beverages, including energy.

The authors of the bill pointed out that since the end of 2016, nutritional information for most prepacked foods is mandatory. But that doesn't apply to alcohol.

The amendments to the law were intended to allow consumers to obtain easily accessible information on alcoholic beverages and to assess their health effects.

Several MPs criticized the idea, saying that such changes would not help people with alcohol addiction. On the other hand, Anda Čakša (New Unity) said that the information on the label would help those who are not yet addicted but on the path to dependency to think twice.

However, the majority of the Saeima rejected the intention. 32 members voted for the change, 40 against and 15 abstained.
