Dead body found in trash bags; two suspects detained

The body of a man was found in garbage bags in Salaspils municipality, Dole Island, in early February, State Police (VP) reported. Two men have been detained on suspicion of murder and desecrating the body.

The victim is likely to have been killed on January 1, and the body was initially held on a balcony at an apartment building in Rīga, Āgenskalns, police said. Criminal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the incident.

The VP said that at around 14:30 on February 7, an eyewitness call was received. The eyewitness had spotted a suspicious large trash bag near a gravel road on Dole Island. Police officers found the body of a middle-aged man in bags wrapped with duct tape as they arrived at the scene.

On February 14, the VP apprehended two men on suspicion of the crime, who were born in 1961 and 1972 and have no criminal record.

The investigation has so far found that the motive of the murder was a personal conflict, which broke out in Pārdaugava, Rīga, under alcohol intoxication. Information obtained during the investigation indicates that after the murder of a man, which was likely committed on January 1 in an apartment in Rīga, Āgenskalns microdistrict, the suspects put the body in bags and placed them on the balcony of the apartment, where it had stood for a week. They then dropped it off the balcony, and the body in the bags lay outside the apartment for a couple more days.

Later the suspects took the body to the island and left it there.

Criminal proceedings have been commenced for murder if after it the desecration of a body has been committed and for the desecration of an unburied body, if it has been committed by a group of persons upon prior agreement.

On February 15 one of the men was taken into custody and the other man was refused custody by the court, consequently, he was placed under a non-custodial security measure.
