Dead infant found at Liepāja landfill

A dead infant has been found in a landfill sorting plant in Liepāja, State Police confirmed to TV Kurzeme on March 7.

State police declined to provide more information, citing the interests of the investigation.

The body of the female infant was found at SIA “Eko Kurzeme” waste sorting plant “Skudras” located in the territory of Liepāja RAS landfill.

“Police arrived and asked where the sorting point was. And it is located in the leased landfill area, the landfill is leased by Eco Baltia Vide. As far as I could hear, the body of a child was found in this trash stream in cardboard packaging. Liepāja RAS has been in operation for 24 years and here in landfill we have been accepting waste since 2004. And this is the first time this situation has happened,” Normunds Niedols, a Board Member of the landfill management company Liepāja RAS, told Rus.LSM.lv.

Police informed that information was confirmed at the scene – the body of a newborn girl was found at the sorting point of the landfill.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated in the State Police and expert reports will be appointed to determine the cause of death of the newborn.
