Anti-graft cops raid Valka again on EU fund fraud suspicion

On March 5, the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) in cooperation with the European Public Prosecutor's Office carried out searches at several locations in Valka and elsewhere in Latvia. Searches had already been carried out in this case in November last year, the KNAB said.

On November 6 last year, the European Public Prosecutor's Office opened criminal proceedings and referred them to the KNAB as the competent authority for investigation. At that time, searches, seizures, and interrogations were already taking place at several sites in Valka and elsewhere in Latvia in connection with an alleged EU fund fraud of at least €776,000.

KNAB suspects that several former and current officials of the Valka Municipality, allegedly abusing their office for selfish purposes, together with a business representative, carried out illegal activities in connection with two projects implemented by the municipality. The criminal activities allegedly aimed to illegally obtain a total of at least EUR 2 million in European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funding for the implementation of the projects.

Both projects are related to the infrastructure of an industrial building site.

The KNAB is currently continuing its investigations and consolidating the evidence obtained.
