Woman gets community service for flushing kittens down toilet

The prosecution has imposed community service on a woman for drowning kittens in a toilet, according to a public prosecutor's office decision.

Last summer, the woman's cat gave birth to five kittens, who she threw one at a time in the toilet in her apartment in Daugavpils and flushed them away. Four kittens died as a result of the woman's actions, but one kitten survived.

The woman is unemployed and has no criminal record.

The defendant pleaded guilty and expressed regret, according to the prosecution.

The criminal law on cruelty to an animal that has resulted in its death provides for imprisonment of up to three years, community service or a fine.

The prosecution has imposed public service on the woman for 200 hours, also depriving her of the right to keep cats for one year.
