Security service suspects sanction breaches in plywood transport

The State Security Service (VDD) has carried out inspections at several locations in Valmiera on suspicion of violating European Union (EU) sanctions, VDD reported February 27.

There are suspicions about transporting cargo of plywood produced in Russia and Belarus through Latvia to Ukraine, the service reported.

The VDD performed criminal procedural activities last week, February 22, in criminal proceedings initiated by the Service on November 24 last year regarding violation of the sanctions imposed by international organizations and Latvia, if significant harm has been caused thereby (Section 84, Paragraph one of the Criminal Law).

During the investigation, the VDD obtained information on illegal activities related to the export of square plywood to Ukraine. It has been established during the investigation that cargo of plywood produced in Russia and Belarus has been exported from Latvia to Ukraine using counterfeit documents on the origin of goods from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Transactions using certificates of origin issued unduly have contributed to a violation of international sanctions, the service said.

VDD promises to provide additional information on the progress of the investigation in line with the progress of the criminal proceedings.
