Man sentenced to 18 years in prison for murdering his grandfather

Last week, the Vidzeme District Court sentenced a man to 18 years' imprisonment and two years' probation supervision for killing his grandfather. The accomplice in the murder was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment and one year's probation supervision, the prosecutor's office said March 28.

The grandson of the murdered man, one of his two heirs, believing that his grandfather was going to sell his real estate and cut down the forests on his property, thus significantly reducing the grandson's inheritance as an heir, reportedly decided to murder his grandfather.

The defendant removed a hunting weapon, a shotgun registered in his name, from a gun safe in his possession and gave it to another person who, knowing of the defendant's intention to kill his grandfather, decided to support it and agreed to keep the weapon in his possession. Several days later, on the instructions of the accused, the accomplice placed the firearm in a car in his use, which the accused later drove to the house where the grandfather lived.

On approaching the kitchen window of the grandfather's house and seeing that the grandfather was in the kitchen, the accused shot the victim in the head with a loaded hunting rifle through the glass of the kitchen window. The shot caused serious injuries to the victim, resulting in his death.

After committing the murder, the accused entered the victim's residence and stole his wallet.

According to the court, the accomplice received "at least EUR 140" for taking part in the act and helping to cover it up later.

On March 20 , the Court handed down a summary judgment in the case. At the same time, the Court adopted a subsidiary decision finding that two witnesses had allegedly given false testimony. The decision was sent to the investigating authority for pre-trial proceedings.
