He said that this year the fence on the land border with Belarus would be complete. The fence itself is not the only security element, especially in circumstances where Belarus supports crossing illegal borders and where the fence is constantly being damaged. To prevent illegal crossing of the border, there will be a complex solution with technologies that will allow attempts to move the border to be identified anywhere, the minister noted.
The minister said border guards were still working under an enforced regime despite fewer attempts to cross illegally, a trend seen across the region.
“However, we are in a standby position in anticipation of what next steps Russia can take,” Kozlovskis said.
The situation is calm at the moment, but there are no indications of the way it would be in the near future. The minister noted there is no need for assistance from foreign border guards, but the situation may change.
