Teachers to push for better load balancing in next year's budget

The Latvian Education and Science Workers' Union (LIZDA) will ask for funding in the next year's budget for the next stage of balancing teachers' loads, LIZDA Chairwoman Inga Vanaga told LETA November 3.

Balancing teacher loads was one of the requirements of the teacher strike agreement, but in LIZDA's view it has not been achieved.

The trade union will also call for a revision of the spending in vocational education, where spending has not been revised since 2007, as well as the funding of the science base.

Overall, according to Vanaga, it would have been necessary to devote more funding to education, especially to higher education and science.

Of the additional EUR 119.7 million allocated for implementation of priority measures in the field of education and science, next year EUR 91.3 million will be directed towards implementation of the teachers' pay growth schedule in pre-school, general and vocational, vocational orientation and interest education, as well as higher education.
