Addiction helpline to be available in Latvia

On May 6, a consultative phone 67037333, aimed at people needing support to solve addiction problems will begin work, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) reported on Tuesday.

The SPKC said that the use of addictive substances is a widespread problem in Latvia. In 2023, almost a third of the population aged 18-74 used a tobacco or nicotine-containing product daily. By contrast, by registered absolute alcohol consumption per inhabitant aged 15 or over, Latvia ranks first among the OECD countries. There is also a growing trend when it comes to trying drugs.

The line aims to provide anonymous psychological help, and motivate and support residents in changing their or fellow people's habits. Information on available resources and services for addiction treatment will also be available.

Residents will be advised on smoking cessation, alcohol, drug abuse problems, gambling, and co-dependency issues.

The service will be provided by the health center “Vivendi” on the order of the SPKC and will be available on working days from 9:00 to 18:00.

The service is scheduled to be available until May 4, 2025.
