Body of missing Latvian fisherman found

The body of a Latvian fisherman who went missing last year after falling overboard has been recovered, reported Norwegian public media NRK April 22.

The remains of Latvian Romans Solovjovs (38) was found on the evening of Friday, April 12 by the crew of a fishing vessel southeast of Svalbard, over a year after he was reported missing.

Norwegian police confirmed the identity of the deceased using DNA evidence and notified his next of kin.

There is no final autopsy report yet, but the cause of death is believed to be drowning.

Solovjovs was reported missing to the police following a man-overboard incident on a vessel that was crab fishing off Svalbard on January 30, 2023. His body was found around 20 nautical miles from where he was lost at sea.

Solovjovs was a crew member on board the crab boat 'Hunter'. A full investigation of the circumstances that led to his death is ongoing, said NRK.
