Latvian rapper Platina to be expelled from Russia

A Russian court has decided to expel Latvian national Roberts Plaudis, a rapper with the stage name Platina, Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) told Latvian Television on April 23.

Platina was detained in Russia, the city of Tomsk, last Friday when he was performing at a nightclub. The expulsion decision was taken on Monday and the expulsion will take place as soon as possible, as stated by the Latvian MFA.

Roberts Plaudis raps in Russian and has performed many times in Russia. This time he had been on tour for a week and that day, at a concert in Tomsk, Russian special task force showed up during the performance and detained him directly on stage, and so far the rapper has been kept in isolation.

The Meduza portal reported that Platina received administrative penalties for violating entry rules, illegally working, and refusing medical checks for intoxication, and on a possible drug propaganda offense.

As confirmed by the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the court's official reason for the expulsion was the fact that he was concerting in Russia despite having arrived on a tourist visa.

It has been reported numerous times that arrivals from abroad in Russia are exposed to various security risks and therefore it is better not to go there. Furthermore, consular assistance is difficult in the current geopolitical context. The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns about this once again.
