Unlike existing drones, the new ones will be autonomous. This means they will be able to fly and transmit information unmanned by police. In order to implement their use, appropriate infrastructure needs to be built, said Rīga municipal police, indicating that four autonomous drones could appear in the capital in three years.
Deputy Chief of local Government Police Andrejs Aronovs explains: “We plan to use an autonomous drone to patrol the Ķīšezers and Vecāķi aquatoriums, namely the Gulf of Riga coastal Zone and Lake Ķīšezers. These drones will record, say, potential environmental violations, [such as] pollution, poaching, [also] boat control. In the future, we are very hopeful that we will also succeed in integrating artificial intelligence tools, and heat cameras, while also using the regular camera, it will also be a significant support for our rescuers, at least to monitor the bathing areas.”
Rīga City Council plans to co-operate with the municipality of Turin, because it uses drones widely to monitor public events, said police.
