Fire at Occupation Museum

Take note – story published 8 years ago

Fire crews responded quickly Friday after smoke was spotted coming from the roof of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia in Riga's Old Town.

The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) responded to a call at 11:30. Luckily they have a depot just on the other side of the Stone Bridge across the River Daugava and were on the scene within seconds.

After a brief battle with the flames at a corner section of the building, the fire crews were in control and began pulling off sheets of metal cladding and scraping out singed insulation materials as tourists arriving for a weekend Spring break looked on.

VUGD said a 15-square meter section of the roof was affected.

The cause has yet to be established.
