So far Latvia has received a total of 154 persons under the EU refugee relocation program, of which ten persons have been granted the status of a refugee and 53 persons have been granted the status of alternative protection. The alternative protection status is valid for one year.
The asylum requests of other relocated persons are still being reviewed.
The most recently relocated group arrived in Latvia in early November. Sixteen persons from Syria in need of international protection, including eight underage children, were brought to Latvia from Greece.
In 2015 Latvia committed to taking in 531 asylum seekers over two years. While most of them will be relocated from EU member states Greece and Italy, 50 people will have to be resettled from third countries, such as Turkey.
