Water levels rise in Latvian rivers

An increase in water level continues in Latvian rivers, said the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC).

Rise in water levels is observed in all major rivers. There is widespread flooding of river banks and lower places, and a yellow alert regarding high water level is in effect

As LVĢMC observations show, rivers are mostly ice-free on the first day of the year. As water levels rise, there will be even more widespread flooding of banks and lower places.

With the arrival of the frost in Latvia, the initial ice formations will resume and there will be congestion of ice in river bends and narrower areas, resulting in severe fluctuations in water levels and therefore there is a risk of significantly wider areas being flooded in certain regions.

LVĢMC warns that being on ice these days is dangerous.
