Flood alert in the Daugava near Pļaviņas

Ice congestion in the Daugava near Pļaviņas continues to form, causing a rapid rise in water levels, warns the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC).

With the big frost, the Daugava has not yet completely overlapped with a steady layer of ice, with an intense buildup of ice chunks. Last night, ice congestion at times blocked the current, so at Pļaviņas water levels rose by almost three meters in a matter of hours. It's down two meters Friday morning.

LVGMC has distributed the orange alert, which will be in effect until Monday, January 8 regarding drastic changes in water levels in the area and flooding arising from it.

Predicting fluctuations in water levels under such conditions is impossible, therefore residents are invited to keep up with the latest information.

Frost will intensify during the weekend in eastern Latvia, but a small thaw will begin in the first half of next week.
