Record-cold May 9 morning in Latvia

On Thursday morning, air temperatures for places in Vidzeme and Latgale have slipped below the -5 degree mark, reaching new cold records, according to information from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

The lowest temperature was recorded in Madona and Zosēni, where it reached -5.5 C, and Rēzekne at -5.1 C. The cold record for this date, May 9, has been set in Madona, Rēzekne, Dagda, Alūksne and Gulbene. In Rēzekne and Dagda, this is an all-month record, which means that never before has May recorded such low temperatures.

The national May 9 cold record has remained unbeaten, with -6.5 degrees in Zosēni on that date in 1999.

For Kurzeme, most of the extreme west of Zemgale and Vidzeme, the frost has passed since the sky was overcast at night, with some rain in places.

Forecasts show there will be no more frosts in Latvia next night, but during the weekend and early next week, temperatures will approach zero at night.
