Another cold and snowy week ahead across Latvia

Freezing conditions and frequent snowfall are expected in Latvia next week, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC) predicts.

On Monday, there will still be cloudy skies, bringing snow to most of the country, and sleet to coastal districts. In many places, the thickness of the snow cover will increase by another five to nine centimeters. A slow wind will blow, but from the morning the north or north-westerly wind will increase in strength, and it will be gusty on the sea coast.

The air temperature will mostly remain below 0 degrees Celsius. At night, the thermometer will drop to  around -5 C in many places, though in the east it could touch -10 degrees. During the day the air will warm up to from +2 to -2 C, creating potetially treacherous driving conditions degrees, while in the north of Vidzeme the air temperature will be in the range -2 to -6 C.

Over the rest of the working week, weather conditions typical of winter are expected and the activity of cyclones will continue, however the intensity of precipitation will decrease. Sometimes it will snow, some days there will also be a gusty wind, and in most parts of the country the air temperature will remain below freezing both at night and during the day. It is possible that temperatures of -20 C will again visit Latvia at night in the second half of the week.
