2023 became the third warmest observation in history, sharing the spot with 2015. 2019 ranks second with 8.2 degrees, while the warmest was 2020 with an average temperature of 8.8 degrees.
The last 11 years in Latvia have been warmer than the norm or average temperature of 1991-2020, which is 6.8 degrees. Only in 2012 and 2010, the average air temperature last dropped below normal – it was 6.1 and 5.6 degrees, respectively.
While May last year was the driest in sightings history and June was the second driest, annual total rainfall was 11% above the norm, with 2023 averaging the wettest in the country since 2017.
The warmest 2023 was in the center of Riga, where the average air temperature reached 9.0 degrees, the coolest being in Alūksne, where the average annual temperature was 6.6 degrees.
