A very, very warm Easter

On Sunday, March 31, the highest air temperature in the country was 22.8 degrees in Zvejniekciems, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

This is a new national record for the warmest day of the month and of March 31.

The record for the maximum air temperature in March was surpassed at all observation stations, except Kolka and Mērsrags, where south-easterly winds brought cool air from the Gulf of Riga.

The new March heat record in the capital is 21.7 degrees.

The 22-degree mark was exceeded not only in Zvejniekciems but also in Gulbene, Jēkabpils, Madona, Rēzekne and Skrīveri.

The monthly heat record was beaten by five degrees in places. In Rezekne, the previous March heat record was 17.2 degrees in 2007, the new record is 22.1 degrees. In Madona, the monthly heat record has been revised from 17.5 to 22.5 degrees. 

The previous highest air temperature recorded in March was 20.8 degrees on March 30, 1968 in Mērsrags. The national heat record was previously 19.1 degrees on March 31, recorded in 2010 in Rucava.

The heat record of  April 1 is also expected to be set.
