Latvian artists nominated for Astrid Lindgren award

Latvian artists Gita Treice and Anete Melēce have been nominated for the 2021 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, Latvian Council for Children's and Youth Literature reported on June 11.

Both artists have achieved international success, winning multiple book illustration contests, Anete Melēce winning also an animation festival.

Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award is one of the world's most prestigious awards in children's literature, created by the Swedish Government in 2002. It is awarded each year to authors, storytellers, illustrators of children's books. The award aims to promote interest in children's and youth literature worldwide.

Gita Treice has been especially successful with her illustrations for poetry book "Brūveri brūvē" (Brewers Brew) in watercolor technique, whereas Anete Melēce has been recently noticed with her own book "Kiosks" (The Kiosk), illustrated with bright marker drawings.

Previously, Latvian nominees for the Astrid Lindgren award have been Imants Ziedonis, Juris Zvirgzdiņš, Anita Paegle, Reinis Pētersons, Māra Cielēna, Māris Rungulis, Inese Zandere, Gundega Muzikante and Gita Treice.
