Film looks at efforts to preserve the language and culture of the Livs

Take note – story published 5 years ago

LSM is pleased to continue its English-subtitled series of documentary films entitled Latvian Code, selected in an annual contest held by Latvian Public Television (LTV).

These films reflect the extraordinary lives of people in Latvia and each year serve as a blueprint of the state of affairs in the private lives and aspirations of today's Latvian residents.

This year's fifth film to be featured, titled Trillium, follows the footsteps of poet and researcher Valts Ernštreits, who is among about 20 people able to speak fluent Livonian – an indigenous language related to Estonian and Finnish – in his efforts to look after the language and culture of these ancient settlers of the Baltic Sea coast.

"The people who made the film say that maybe Valts is mad, but it shows that he is certainly not indifferent. He is an enthusiastic carrier of knowledge to the next generations. As the protagonist himself has said: 'Dying out is easy, but how can you go on existing for so long?'" wrote film critic Elīna Semane on lsm.lv.

As ever, to watch the film with subtitles, pick English in the subtitles menu in the player above.

Latvia, 2018.

Director: Zane Gargažina.
