Latvian bank profits in nine months of 2023 at €564.4 million

The Latvian banking sector made a profit of 564.406 million euros in nine months this year, which is 2.6 times more than in the same period of 2022, according to data released by the Latvian central bank (Bank of Latvia) on December 18, newswire LETA reports.

Banks' interest income accounted for €923.883 million in the nine months of 2023, 2.3 times higher than in the nine months of 2022, while interest expenditure was €12.07 million, an increase of 3.2 times.

But bank commission income was 253,865 million euros in nine months this year, up 6.1 percent from the nine months of 2022, while bank commission spending rose 9.1 percent - to 75.95 million euros.

At the end of September 2023, bank sector assets totaled EUR 27.378 billion, which is 1.2% or EUR 326.74 million less than at the end of 2022, when bank sector assets comprised EUR 27.704 billion.

The amount of loans granted by banks to non-bank customers at the end of September this year was 15.878 billion euros, which is 1.4% or 214.821 million euros more than at the end of 2022.

Data from the Bank of Latvia also show that the market share of the five largest banks in assets was 89% at the end of September 2023 (88.8% at the end of 2022), 89.18% (90.18%) in loans to non-bank customers, and 90.36% (89.88%) in deposits of non-bank clients.

In the nine months of 2022, the total profit of the banking sector was EUR 216.476 million, while the total profit of 2022 was EUR 321.322 million.
