Power distribution rates could be reviewed in case of extreme prices

Electricity distribution operator JSC "Sadales tīkls (ST)" tariff could be revised in December in the event of significant changes in electricity prices, said Kristīne Sarkane, executive board member of the ST, in a press briefing Tuesday.

She drew attention to the fact that the price of electricity represented only 10% of the distribution tariff, so that, in the event of significant price changes, the effect on the tariff would be around 3%.

In the current situation, the ST does not see any justification for revising anything in the tariff, nor does optimism about a significant reduction in the price of electricity in the future have any basis, Sarkane said.

She stressed that the discussion should therefore be about national social policy and support measures for vulnerable users, adding that the ST is not a national social policy maker.

Sarkane said that the Ministry of Climate and Energy is currently working very actively on support measures, and several of them have already been approved by the government.

Sarkane added that households can cut their tariffs by reviewing connection capacity. Between May and August, around 22,000 customers of the ST have reduced their load, thus releasing 67 megawatts of network capacity, which means 6600 new three-phase 16 am-per-capita connections. She said that the total financial savings for these households amounted to €1.5 million per year.

The potential to cut capacity is for another 100,000 households with three-phase and 25-amp connections, she said.
