Police check food courier cars in special raid

After a raid inspecting food courier cars in Riga, the State Police (VP) in cooperation with the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) has removed several number plates and canceled roadworthiness tests. A total of more than 30 administrative cases have also been opened for various offenses, VP said January 29.

Car inspections of food couriers in Rīga took place on Friday, January 26, at the Vanšu Bridge.

A total of about 900 cars were tested in four hours. Eight number plates (both the Republic of Latvia and Finland number plates) were removed for non-compliance of the vehicle with the technical requirements, but 6 roadworthiness tests were annulled.

According to the VP, several of the cars were in “catastrophic condition” and were not allowed to participate in road traffic.

During the inspection, 11 drivers were found to be driving without a license, three drivers had not undergone compulsory civil insurance for the vehicle, 11 vehicles had not undergone a roadworthiness test and eight had no proper tire tread. Administrative infringement proceedings have been initiated for all these infringements.

Two drivers were under the influence of alcohol and one possibly under the influence of drugs.

The VP said it would continue to carry out this type of testing.

The police raid was carried out after a TV3 report on an alleged scheme developed for food couriers to use scrap cars with Finnish number plates.
