Major Riga bridge to get repairs in fall, mayor says

The fall will see repair works at the crumbling Vanšu bridge that links central Riga to the booming Ķīpsala island and the Āgenskalns neighborhood, Riga mayor Nils Ušakovs (Harmony) told LTV March 7.

The mayor said this after public concern over the state of the bridge, as images emerged showing that the stairs leading to the November 11 embankment are crumbling. Subsequently, tape was installed to discourage locals from using them.

Ušakovs says that it's planned to reconstruct the Vanšu bridge after the Salu bridge over Zaķusala island is rebuilt. "If things progress in due speed, we'll start a full-fledged reconstruction in the fall," he told LTV.

Works would continue throughout 2019 and cost about €10m, which amount the city would have to cover in full.

Ušakovs also said the Brasas overpass and the Deglava bridge are next in line for reconstruction.

Back in 2013 the Riga Traffic Department said the bridge will be reconstructed in 2017.
