Take note – story published 9 years ago

A surprising increase in the number of asylum seekers at Latvian border points was noted Thursday, Border Guard spokeswoman Jevgēnija Pozņaka told Latvian Public Radio.

While only 185 people applied for asylum in Latvia over the entire course of last year, the Border Guard service formally registered altogether eight asylum seekers at the Silene border crossing yesterday.  In addition to four Syrians, three Georgians and one Somali citizen requesting asylum in Latvia, a female citizen of Ukraine also petitioned for asylum in Riga.

According to Border Guard statistics, so far this year 142 persons have applied for asylum here, including these latest arrivals.
