The occasion was marked November 7 by a specia centenary sitting of the parliament, an early treat for the 100 deputies who took their oaths of office only last week.
"We can learn from the predecessors of the parliament how important it is not to lose clarity about the big goal to be achieved and not to get lost in everyday details. One hundred years ago, our forefathers in this house set a goal for themselves - to build a free and democratic Latvia - and chose to follow the path of parliamentarism. [It was] Difficult, complicated, winding and steep, but still the only right way. A path that has largely determined what we are, what our country is now and what it will be like in a hundred years," said newly-installed speaker Edvards Smiltēns.
"The Saeima is never finished. It always continues to grow and develop... We have to earn respect ourselves. Both with reasonable, fair and understandable decisions, and with respect for the voter, Latvian citizen, and with respect for each other in the Saeima," said Smiltēns.
Before the ceremonial session, readings and expert discussions were held.
