Rīga City Council official suspected of bribery

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) is investigating the possible offering of a large-scale bribe by the Deputy Director of the Rīga City Council's Outdoors and Mobility Department, Jānis Vaivods, KNAB said on February 28.

As reported, on Monday, KNAB visited the city council's department and it was unofficially reported that Vaivods was detained.

In the pre-trial investigation of the KNAB, it was found that Jānis Vaivods, acting director of Riga City Council's Outdoors and Mobility Department (previously Transport Department) may have made a bribe offer to another public official to use his position of service and take a favorable decision in the interests of the bribe provider.

The KNAB commenced criminal proceedings on January 8 for the alleged offense.

Two persons involved in criminal proceedings have the right of defense. Currently, one person is placed on non-custodial security.

KNAB said the pre-trial investigation is not related to the day-to-day activities of Riga City Council's department.
