KNAB swoops on Rīga city council department

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB), Latvia's anti-graft agency, has conducted investigative activities in the Riga City Council's Outside and Mobility Department on Monday, February 26 reported the LETA news agency.

KNAB employees were observed to be in attendance at the building where the department's management is located. Acting head of the department Jānis Vaivods was reportedly not contactable.

A representative of the department, Lelde Rudzika, told Latvian Television that Vaivods was not present at the city council on Monday and "would likely not show up."

According to unofficial information available to Latvian Radio, Vaivods has been detained.

It is believed the activity is linked to a criminal trial that started on January 8 but KNAB denied that the actions taken on Monday were related to an inspection concluded at the end of last year on Rīga street renovation works carried out by the Transport Department of the municipal administration.

KNAB said it will inform the public about the criminal proceedings, including the number of persons involved and the criminal offenses investigated, when procedural decisions have been made and a sufficient amount of evidence has been obtained.

In 2023, the reorganization of the Transport Department of the Riga City Council began, transforming it into the oddly-named Department of Outdoors and Mobility. It is planned that the reorganization will be concluded on September 1, 2025.
