Anti-graft cops examine municipal funds fraud case

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has referred criminal proceedings to the prosecutor's office, in which evidence has been obtained that a former state official of Ādaži municipality has defrauded the budget resources of the local government, KNAB reported December 29. 

The criminal case file contains information that between June 2022 and October 2023, a former social worker of the municipality of Ādaži, acting in an organized group, achieved an unjustified granting of social benefit to one of the persons involved in the criminal offense.

The former public official received a bribe - a gift card worth €100 - from other people involved in the crime for these criminal acts.

As a result of fraudulent activities, the local government has sustained at least EUR 3,000 in financial losses.

KNAB commenced criminal proceedings on June 8 and investigated fraud and bribery in an organized group, as well as taking bribes.

After the pre-trial investigation, KNAB encouraged four persons to be prosecuted for fraud in an organized group. In addition, KNAB accused the former public official of taking bribes, while three other natural persons were involved in criminal activities – giving bribes in an organized group.
