As reported, in Liepāja, on the evening of Sunday, July 23, the wall of the wastewater treatment plants collapsed.
All responsible services have been mobilized to eliminate the emergency. Monitoring of water quality and prevention measures of technical damage to wastewater treatment plants are in place, said Gunārs Ansiņš, Chairman of the Liepāja City Council.
Taking into account the extent of pollution, wind direction, and currents, pollution in a smaller concentration and dispersed form will reach Pāvilosta on Tuesday, July 25. Currently, no significant damage to human health and fish resources has been identified, said Evita Šestakova, Head of State Environmental Service Kurzeme Region Management.
While the responsible specialists stress that there are no threats to human health, residents are invited not to swim in coastal areas in the coming days, from Liepaja City Beach north to Sakas parish.
The Health Inspectorate has also imposed a ban on swimming on the beaches of Liepāja. The Inspectorate will perform microbiological analyses of water in Liepājas swimming areas on Tuesdays.
In order to reduce the amount of water entering wastewater plants, the responsible services are calling on residents to reduce water consumption in the coming days. It is also recommended not to wash laundry with chemicals in order to minimize the impact of pollution. Residents have to take into account that water pressure will be reduced these days.
