Fourteen flu patients died last week in Latvia

Last week, the number of flu and Covid-19 patients continued to decline, but 14 patients died from the flu within the week, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) data of March 20.

Last week, a total of 778 patients had approached general practitioners with acute symptoms of upper respiratory infection, 180 of whom had been diagnosed with “influenza” based on a typical clinical picture (238 patients a week earlier, 314 patients two weeks earlier). Cases have been recorded in Daugavpils, Ventspils, Rēzekne, Rīga, Liepāja, Gulbene, Jēkabpils, and Jurmala. Flu cases have been recorded in all age groups. The highest influenza intensity was recorded in the 0-4 age group.

Within a week, 14 people have died from the flu, bringing the total to 49 deaths during all monitoring (since week 40, 2023).

All the dead had several side illnesses, with only one patient having received flu vaccination this season. The other 48 patients who died had not been vaccinated against seasonal flu this season.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Latvia also continues to decrease – 22 cases have been laboratory confirmed (a week previously also 22), and 485 laboratory tests (previously 501) have been performed on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus. 36 Covid-19 patients are in hospital (a week ago 31, two weeks ago 47).

6 deaths of Covid-19 patients were recorded (8 a week earlier). Two deaths listed Covid-19 as the primary diagnosis.
