Last week the number of Covid-19 patients increased by 15%, Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) epidemiologist Jurijs Perevoščikovs said at a press briefing January 12.

He said the cases identified last week represented people who got infected during the holidays. There were more people who got infected while attending private events, compared to the week before that.

Last week, nearly every day over 1,000 cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Latvia. The number of people in hospitals increased by 11%.

According to Perevoščikovs, the safety measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 are working 'at 85% capacity'. It is not enough to reduce infection rates, he said.
