Latvian-Russian border fence hoped to be built within year

Within a couple of weeks, construction of the fence is planned to begin on the Latvian-Russian border, involving several companies and the National Armed Forces, Latvian Television reported on February 2.

State JSC "State real estate" (VNĪ) has committed to completing the fence for a total of approximately 180 kilometers by the end of this year – faster than on the border between Latvia and Belarus, where the overall length was smaller. The plan to do this is to outsource the work to various builders, including the National Armed Forces (NBS). Trees and shrubs still need to be felled in many places.

The new fence will be different from the one that was being built here six years ago. It will be slightly higher and similar to the one just finished along the Belarus border.

VNĪ expects the first works to start in March, but all must be completed by the end of the year. “Saving time and also risk diversification will be achieved by seven to eight builders can start building a fence at the same time so they can meet somewhere,” explained Jelena Gavrilova, Board Member of VNĪ.

The fence along Belarus was entrusted to one general company, Citrus Solutions. A contract has already been concluded with the same company for the construction of a fence along Russia, but also with “Hagberg Contruction”. “Nords Building” and “Latvijas Autocelu Uzturetajs” have won procurements in other stages. The NBS will also be involved.

The works will be led by VNĪ and will start in spring.
