"From Wednesday, March 6th, residents will be forbidden to stay on ice of water bodies located in Riga administrative territory," the council said, citing weather forecasts which expect weather comfortably above freezing point.
The ban will remain in place until further notice and the Municipal Police will be on the lookout for anyone flouting the rule.
Violations could result in a police warning being issued or a fine of up to €70 euros imposed for non-compliance. In addition, people who are found on the ice under the influence of alcohol during the ban can be punished with a fine of between €15 and €100.
As recently reported by LSM, venturing onto the ice can have dramatic consequences. According to the State Fire and Rescue Service, six dead bodies have already been pulled from the water this year and many others have been rescued.
