Hotel sector in Latvia continues its gradual recovery

Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia and published June 13 show that in April 2024 the number of non-resident and resident arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 176.2 thousand, which is 4.1 % more than in April 2023. 

The number of nights spent by visitors comprised 305.4 thousand, their number remaining at the level of April last year.

In the first four months of this year, the number of non-resident and resident visitors comprised 598.7 thousand, which is 7.7 % more than in the four months of 2023, however, it is 10 % fewer than in the four months of 2019, during the time before the pandemic, so the sector still has some way to go to hit new highs.

In April 2024 non-resident arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 60 % or 105.7 thousand people, which is 7.1 % more than in April last year, but 27.5 % fewer than before the pandemic in April 2019 and Russia's war in Ukraine, which has a significant impact on the arrival of non-residents to Latvia. The number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to April 2023, has grown by 0.4 % and comprised 186.7 thousand. Non-residents on average spent 1.77 nights at the tourist accommodation establishments (1.88 nights in April last year).

The majority of non-residents came from Lithuania (14.9 thousand), Estonia (13 thousand), Germany (9.5 thousand), Finland (7.8 thousand), the United Kingdom (6.2 thousand), Poland (5.7 thousand), Spain (4.4 thousand), Sweden (4.3 thousand) and the USA (3.2 thousand).

Most non-resident visitors were hosted in Riga – 80.1 %, Jūrmala – 6.2 %, Mārupe municipality – 4.2 %, Liepāja – 2 % and Daugavpils – 1.1 %.

In April 2024 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 70.5 thousand resident visitors, as much as in April 2023, but 17.9 % more than in April 2019 before the pandemic. The number of nights spent by them comprised 118.7 thousand, which is a drop of 0.6 %, compared to April last year. Residents on average spent 1.68 nights at the tourist accommodation establishments (1.69 nights in April last year).

Residents stayed mostly in Riga (34.4 %), Jūrmala (10.4 %), Liepāja (8.3 %), Daugavpils (4.8 %), Cēsis municipality (3.5 %), Sigulda and Kuldīga municipality (3 %).
