Major roadworks on Jelgava Highway in Latvia

Starting from this week, repair works on two sections of the Jelgava Highway have been started and drivers have to count on significant traffic restrictions, the state-owned company "Latvian State Roads" (LVC) said Monday.

On the Jelgava Highway (A8), resurfacing work starts this week from Dalbe to the Vircava River, with three reverse traffic sections planned; construction work is also ongoing on the section from Riga to Jaunolaine. Drivers should therefore expect new traffic restrictions and plan for significant extra travel time - up to an hour.

To get from Jelgava to Rīga or vice versa, LVC encourages the use of alternative routes or train connections where possible.

In total, 70 sections of the national road network are under construction.

The biggest traffic restrictions are on the main national roads:

  • Vidzeme Highway (A2) from the turn to Cēsis (P20) to Rīdzene - six traffic lights, speed limits 70 and 50 km/h. Estimated crossing time 45 minutes;
  • Jelgava Highway (A8) from Jaunolaine to Riga, speed limit 70 and 50 km/h, estimated crossing time 45 minutes;
  • Jelgava Highway (A8) from Dalbe to the bridge over the Vircava river: speed limits 70 and 50 km/h, up to three traffic lights, estimated crossing time 40 minutes.
