Latvian public invited to civil defense lessons

On June 15, from 10:00 to 15:00, fourteen Latvian cities (Riga, Bauska, Jūrmala, Ogre, Valmiera, Balvi, Gulbene, Rēzekne, Daugavpils, Jēkabpils, Jelgava, Liepāja, Ventspils and Kuldīga) will host an information day dubbed "Armed with knowledge", in which every resident will be able to learn how to act in crisis situations via practical lessons.

"In the current security situation in Europe, when Russia's illegal aggression against a sovereign state is taking place near our borders and Ukraine's struggle for its freedom, everyone must assess their readiness and ability to protect themselves, their fellow citizens and their country. I invite every citizen of Latvia to attend the information day on June 15, in order to arm themselves with knowledge in peacetime and to gain confidence in their ability to act correctly in various crisis situations," said Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds.

"Currently, the readiness of every citizen plays a very important role in the defense of the common country, because in case of war, the main task of the National Armed Forces, including the National Guard, will be to defend Latvia and its citizens from the external enemy. On the other hand, the two main cornerstones of the civil defense system in a war situation are ensuring the basic needs of civilians and providing support to the National Armed Forces in the performance of Latvian defense tasks," commented the Commander of the National Guard, Brigadier General Kaspars Pudāns.

Each venue will have several training stations, improving residents' knowledge and skills in first aid, emergency stockpiling, dealing with explosive objects, radiation or chemical hazards, and obtaining reliable information. Also, in several cities, you will be able to find out about the Civil Defense plan of the municipality. The information day will be organized using the principle of circuit training with several training repetitions.

When going to the event, residents are also invited to familiarize themselves with the materials in the "72 hours" section of the "Sargs.lv" news portal, where in addition to the latest version of the "How to act in case of a crisis" booklet, the manual "How to act in case of war" is also available (in Latvian).

The events will be organized by the Ministry of Defense in cooperation with the National Guard, the State Fire and Rescue Service, the Emergency Medical Service and municipalities.

For more details see the Sargs.lv website and the websites of the respective municipalities.
