Prettiest yards in Latvia to be crowned in open contest

In 2024, for the first time in Latvia, the competition "The Tidiest Latvian Apartment Building Yard 2024" will take place. The residents of any apartment building who are proud of their yard can take part in the competition by submitting photos and videos, Ilze Kurēna, a representative of the association "Mājoklis", told Latvian Radio Monday.

The aim of the competition is to promote community cooperation thus encouraging more active participation of residents in making courtyards and neighborhoods of apartment buildings tidier.

Applications can be submitted from June 10 to August 16. The winners will be announced in September. The competition is free to enter.

"We were surprised that [..] nationwide, no one has taken on or thought of organising such a competition. So we came up with this initiative and we think it could work very well," said Kurēna.

She invited residents of apartment buildings to feel free to share photos of their landscaped courtyards, as this could inspire others to look after their surroundings.

The competition has six nominations: the main prize or "The tidiest Latvian apartment building yard 2024"; the tidiest Riga apartment building yard; the tidiest city apartment building yard (except Riga); the tidiest district apartment building yard; the most efficient Latvian apartment building yard and "Through weeds to roses 2024".

Kurēna pointed out that there are no prerequisites to participate in the competition - if the residents of an apartment building feel happy and proud about their yard, they can submit their application.

The application should include 10 photos of the site - preferably in the best possible quality and from different angles so that the jury can assess the courtyard sufficiently well.  You should also prepare and submit a short video presentation of your yard - no shorter than three minutes but no longer than 10.
