Confusion in Latvia about Russian influencer's visit

Public confusion has been raised by a Rīga nightclub's decision to organize a Russian influencer's concert in Rīga. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the security authorities do not see any violation and will not put obstacles in the way, Latvian Television reported on January 12.

On the social network “X”,  dozens expressed outrage at the plan of a nightclub, while Russian aggression in Ukraine continues, to organize a performance by Russian influencer and DJ Sasha Spilberg in Riga.

Neither the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the security services see any wrongdoing. Influencer Sasha Spilberg, or real name Alexandra Balkovskaya, is not on Latvia's so-called entry blacklist. The Latvian security services have no information that she has directly or indirectly expressed support for the Kremlin's aggression in Ukraine. The influencer is said to have been apolitical and even called for support for refugees from Ukraine on her Telegram channel.

Currently, visas for Russian citizens to enter Latvia are issued only in special cases. The Foreign Ministry allows Sasha Spilberg to enter Latvia on a visa from another Schengen country.

At the same time, the Ministry recalls the duty of event organizers to carefully evaluate publicly available information regarding particular artists and assess whether cooperation with them is acceptable in the current circumstances and does not create reputational, sanctioning, or other risks.

The concert took place as planned at 'First Club' on January 12 according to video clips posted online.
