Survey: Latvians not very keen on any Rīga mayor, past or present

None of the current and former politicians and leaders of forces represented in the Riga City Council is the best mayor of the capital in the opinion of the majority of Latvian citizens, according to a survey published May 12.

The poll was conducted by SKDS on behalf of the "Progressives" party. 1505 respondents took part in the survey. The poll took place from April18 to 22.

The poll asked Latvian residents to choose which of nine former and current mayors, vice-mayors, and politicians from represented and unrepresented forces in the City Council would be the best mayor of Riga.

The most frequent choices were former Mayor Mārtiņš Staķis (Progressives) - 16% and former Mayor Nils Ušakovs (Harmony) - 14.3%.

The former Deputy Mayor of Riga Ainars Šlesers (Latvia First) was named the best potential mayor by 7.7% of respondents, while the party For Stability! leader Aleksejs Rosļikovs was named by 3.9%, and former Riga Mayor Oļegs Burovs (Honor to serve Riga) - by 3.4%.

The current Mayor of Riga Vilnis Ķirsis (New Unity) was named the best mayor by 2.3% of the Latvian population, the Deputy Mayor of Riga Edvards Ratnieks (National Alliance) - 2.6%, the Deputy Mayor Linda Ozola (Code for Riga) - 1.1%, and the politician of the party "Latvian for Development" represented in the City Council Juris Pūce - 1.2%.

29% of respondents said that none of these politicians would be the best mayor of Riga, while 18.2% found it difficult to answer.
