Survey: Latvia's residents see no point in municipal reform

A survey conducted by the research center "Norstat" in cooperation with LSM.lv shows that most of the Latvian society has not seen any improvements after the administrative-territorial reform.

Although one year after the reform of municipalities the report of the responsible ministry concluded that the financial and administrative capacity of municipalities had improved and the availability and quality of services had increased, now, three years after the reform, the majority of citizens admit that they do not see any benefits from the reform in their daily lives.

1008 respondents took part in the survey from May 7 to 16.

The question asked was "Do you see any benefits from the reform of the municipalities in your daily life?"

Only 2% of respondents answered "definitely yes". A further 7% said they rather see at least one benefit from the reform in their daily life.

On the other hand, 36% said they rather see no benefit and another 34% definitely see no benefit.

21% could not answer this question.
