Standardized bus fares being introduced in Latvia

Buses are the lifeline of the regions outside Rīga, as for many hopping on a regional bus is the only way to get to work or to visit relatives. Standardized bus fares are now being introduced across Latvia, starting with the Bauska, Tukums, and Aknīste regions, reported Latvian Radio on Wednesday.

Latvia's shift to funding the hard sciences study programs is starting to pay off. The students may not be turning their backs on science after all as, but there are less and less of them. This year the number of students who applied to study at Latvian universities shrank by 7 percent, and the worst is yet to come as the Education Ministry predicts the number to shrink further by a third.

The Riga City Council ruled Monday to allow both the Europride Gay Rights parade and anti-globalist demonstrations to take place June 20 at the downtown Vērmane Gardens park, however the opposing groups will be kept from mingling at opposite sides of the territory, Latvian Radio news reporter Māris Klūga reported from city hall.
