Fearing the end of the world and the looming communist threat, two thousand Latvian baptists left for Brazil in the early 1920s. The first Latvian settlement - Vārpa (ear, as in ear of corn) - was established in the middle of the jungle and helped shape Christian church traditions in the faraway country, reported Latvian Radio Wednesday.
