Three for the Weekend: Early Midsummer, Performances, Yoga

A week before Midsummer Latvians already start getting ready to celebrate, but that is not all that's going on. Here are some tips for a mid-June weekend.

Performance art

The international performance art festival 'Starptelpa' (Space in between) has been ongoing all week and will end with the grand final events on Friday, June 16 to Sunday, June 18. On Friday, 19:00 to 23:00 at the Art Academy of Latvia, artists of different trades from Latvia, Poland, Finland, Serbia, and Germany will perform, followed by a concert by the Danish band Gents. On Saturday and Sunday, international performances will continue to take place, with the final award ceremony on Sunday 22:00.

More on the festival's social media.

Early Midsummer

About a week before the actual Midsummer (Līgo, Jāņi) festival begins, Latvians begin with ielīgošana or pre-midsummer festivities. On Friday and Saturday, June 16–17, there will be a traditional market of local producers in Vērmanes Garden, Rīga, followed by a twist on Midsummer traditions in an electronic music night at Dirty Deal Teatro (Talsu Street 1) Saturday at 21:00.

Nearly every town has a pre-midsummer fair or festival this weekend, so be sure to check out the nearest one.

International Yoga Day

On Saturday, June 17, the Unversity of Latvia's Institute of Indic Studies marks international yoga day with early-morning practice at 8:00 in the University of Latvia's House of Nature (Jelgavas Street 1) courtyard (register here). The practice will be followed by an international conference for which you can register here.
