Rīga announces birthday celebration events

On Saturday, August 19, the capital city Rīga is celebrating its 822nd birthday. An extensive celebration program has been announced in the city center.

Lucavsala

The day before the main events, August 18, an open-air concert program as well as a drone show will be held at Lucavsala recreation park, as a warm-up before the celebrations. The event will take place 21:00 to 00:30, entrance from 18:00.

Doma Square

On August 19, the Rīga Cathedral Square (Doma Square, Doma laukums) in the Old Town will offer different performances from 14:00 to 23:00, including concerts by Kalush Orchestra, The Sound Poets, Carnival Youth, circus performances and a Best Birthday Cake contest. A separate program for children will also be in place to keep the little ones entertained.

Smilšu Street

On Smilšu Street in the Old Town, jazz and classical music artists from Latvia, Ukraine, Poland, and India will perform between 14:00 and 23:00 for all to enjoy.

Līvu Square

The Līvu Square in the Old Town will be home to a "fun square and joke stage" with circus performances, standup and other activities intended to make you laugh.

Drosmes Square (City Hall Square, Rātslaukums)

At Rātslaukums, the more official celebration bits will take place between 14:00 and 23:00 – the mayor speech (or acting mayor, if no mayor is elected until Saturday), congratulations from different foreign communities, discussions, and a singalong in Latvian and Ukrainian with the choir Maska.

Museums

Most museums located in the Old Town (Photography Museum, Riga Exchange Art Gallery, Decorative Arts and Design Museum, Cinema Museum, and others) will be open and offer different tours and workshops to visitors.
