Girls sweep patriotic song contest

Four winners have been announced of a contest for young people to write patriotic songs.

The contest was run by the State Chancellery and aimed to mark the 180th anniversary of the birth of Karlis Baumanis, composer of the Latvian national anthem.

The four winners in separate age groups were named Wednesday as Diona Liepiņa, Anastasija Jevstigņejeva, Sintija Beļinska and Kristīne Baltruševiča, who were chosen from a field of 17 entrants.

Unfortunately the songs have not yet been made available by the State Chancellery, but they did release the lyrics of one of the winning songs, by 20-year old Sintija Belinska and based on feelings of homesickness:

For the third night in a row
I see home in a dream
There blooming meadows, hills and valleys
There, my brothers and sisters
It is the mighty power I sense
This divine silence heard
When dew drenched feet
Know where their home is.

The judges were composer Andris Vecumnieks, the band The Sound Poets, radio NABA director Madars Štramdiers and poet Jānis Vādons.
